Project description & brief:
Edith Rewa Barrett is popping up for the Month of May with an open studio space, gallery and store at Vacant Assembly. This space will be a celebration of Australia's native flora with a special focus on the coastal Wallum Heathland plants of SE QLD.
Edith will share new design work from her time spent drawing and mark-making in the Wallum with one-off pieces, original artworks, prints, textiles, silk scarves, wallhangings, scrunchies, and a small selection of clothing. Wearable plant companions for your body or wall, worn to feel centered in and connected to our natural world. Photographic prints by Natalie McComas will also be sharing a window into these exquisite heathland landscapes.
Edith will have a small studio corner set up in the space, where she will be drawing, designing and making patterns. Come say hello, have a chat, try some textiles on and enjoy the Wallum!
Special events:
Communal creative evenings will be held each Thursday night 5.30-7.30 where you can bring a project and enjoy making in each other's company.
Closing Event: Saturday 28th May 2-5pm.
About :
Edith Rewa Barrett is an Australian Illustrator and Textile Designer currently based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Edith's work is grounded in protecting the diversity of Australia’s natural environments. She transfers her drawings of plants and place that may not always be geographically or seasonally accessible in our daily lives, onto cloth and paper - to bring snippets of landscapes to people and allow for a place to keep memories and plants alive. Edith is always looking for new ways to entwine the worlds of traditional botany with the contemporary Art + Design space whilst showcasing native plantscapes that are under-represented or unknown.
Edith splits her time between client commissions (In publishing, stationery, fashion and design), exhibition work and her own label, Edith Rewa, which showcases her illustrations onto silk scarves and art prints. Edith has a particular fondness for the flowers of Australian heathlands and for the past 2 years has enjoyed exploring the Wallum of South East Queensland.
