[Con]temporary Living by Paul Rees, oil on linen, 152 cm x 101 cm
Lyn Graham and Paul Rees are painters and printmakers working in Whynot Studio in Brisbane’s West End. West End: Street to Sky is inspired by the suburb they have lived in and loved for decades.
‘My small Street Level paintings focus on West End’s gritty character - the doorways, alleys, graffiti and stairs we walk past every day. Over the 18 months of this project, I was struck by just how quickly our urban landscape changes as shops, cafes and bars come and go and graffiti is overpainted. – Lyn Graham
‘My paintings juxtapose old West End with the apartment towers and tower cranes that are transforming our suburb. I ponder what the future might bring. Each painting includes a woman with a bucket who the law would say has just committed, or is about to commit, a crime. But what is the crime and who has committed it?’ – Paul Rees
