the Story of Lab 266

Lab 266 began its journey of transformation in Dec 2020.

Our community supported us by raising 10K to pay for asbestos removal, construction materials and the human hours needed to regenerate the space. Our aim, as with every space, was to source a minimum of 85% reused/recycled materials. Working with recycled materials is a labour of care and craft. We get a kick out of creatively re-using available resources, and relish the constraints of working with a limited budget and material palette.

The Project Space was launched in August 2021 as a monthly space for hire that flexes to suit what can be imagined - pop-ups, open studios, product testing, experimental ideas or collaborations. Since its inception, it has hosted 41 artists, makers and designers. It was renamed Lab 266 in July 2025, to celebrate the evolution of the space as a platform for experimentation and exchange.

Project Breakdown;

  • 6.5k towards to asbestos removal

  • 2.3k towards to steel work /labour for the new storeroom grate and the recycled steel awning

  • $550 went towards paint, fixings and secondhand steel fencing (sourced from Gumtree and + repurposed as wall cladding)

  • Staff pro bono hours - approx. 157

  • Volunteer hours - approx. 30
